When HR Should Be Involved

Working in a diverse atmosphere is an exciting adventure. However, with every adventure comes its obstacles. Though, most solutions can be worked out with proper communication or talking with your manager, there are times when you should get HR involved. Below are six examples of when to involve HR.

- You witness or are the victim of an illegal act.

When it comes to illegal acts in the workplace, HR is obligated to take action. If you notice or are a victim, you need to go to HR and document your case. For example, you witness a coworker stealing, report it.

- You witness or are the victim of discrimination or harassment.

HR must know about discrimination or harassment. It is illegal for an employer to discriminate against a person because of their age, creed, race, color, sex, national origin, marital status, military status, disability, criminal record, or genetic characteristics.

- You have changes in your circumstances.

If you need to use your paid time off, change your hours, or need information regarding time off, you should contact HR. They will try to make the situation work with all sides.

- You need information about your salary and benefits.

Employers must ensure that employees are compensated correctly. Issues with salary or benefits should be brought up with HR.

- You feel unsafe.

When personal space, physical safety, or emotional stress, all possibilities that could make a person feel unsafe, HR should know. This will help the company ensure a safe work environment.
